the devil and the deep blue sea

    ****

    ****

In diesem Sinne: Keep on posting!

    Rick Perry (former Texas Governor)
“Donald Trump’s candidacy is a cancer on conservatism, and it must be clearly diagnosed, excised and discarded.” July 22nd 2015

“I`m going to support him and help him and do what I can. He is one of the most talented people who has ever run for president I have ever seen.” May 5th 2016, CNN

Now keep in mind, Governor Martinez went out of her way to avoid being insulting to Donald Trump, or disagreeing with him publicly. She politely declined to make herself available and came up with an excuse that was at least plausible. She could have said “I will not appear on stage with a man whose poisonous rhetoric I abhor and who I feel is unfit for the Presidency,” but she did not. And how did Trump respond? By lying about her and stirring up the residents of New Mexico against her.

And by the way – there are many Republicans across the country who have not appeared with Trump at his rallies when he came to their backyard. You have to ask yourself why Governor Martinez got singled out for this treatment in the first place. If you don’t think the fact that she’s latina and female had anything to do with it, then you haven’t been paying attention to Trump all along.

    Can Trump Win?

It is said that the parties decide the primaries (except this year), but the map decides the general election. Since 1992, 18 states have voted for the Democrat every time. Those states plus D.C. are now worth 242 electoral votes. That means the Democratic candidate needs only 28 more electoral votes to get to 270 and win the White House. Battles in four regions will decide the election.

Florida is a region all by itself and with 29 electoral votes, a mighty important one. If the Democrats can hold their usual 242 electoral votes and add Florida's 29--well, you do the math. Donald Trump has a massive problem in South Florida, especially Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, home to large numbers of Latinos. Trump is going to get crushed there, so he has to do especially well in the panhandle and other rural areas of the state. If the Democrats can pull off a massive victory in those southern counties, there goes Florida and there goes the Electoral College. The dislike for Trump in South Florida is so great that the mayor of Miami, Tomás Regalado, a Republican, won't support him.

The second key region is the upper South, namely Virginia and North Carolina. Together they have 28 electoral votes. That just happens to be precisely what the Democrats have to add to their total of 242 to get to 270. So if the Democrats can win Virginia and North Carolina, they can afford to lose Florida, Ohio, and all the other swing states. President Obama won Virginia twice and North Carolina in 2008. North Carolina is going to be a major, major battleground, with a close presidential election, a tight Senate race, and an unpopular governor running for reelection. In addition to all the usual issues, bathrooms are a biggie in North Carolina ever since the governor signed a bill requiring transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds to the sex on their birth certificates. A number of companies have said they will not expand their facilities in Research Triangle Park, one of the fastest growing technology and financial centers in the South. So the bathroom bill has suddenly become an economic issue, with the Democrats saying that the bill signed by Gov. Pat McCrory (R-NC) is costing the state good jobs.

The third battleground region is the Rust Belt. This is the only part of the countryin which Trump could flip Democratic states, especially Pennsylvania. He might also win perennially close Ohio, but that is not part of the 242 "blue wall." Blue-collar workers in the Rust Belt are hurting and Trump's plans to stop signing trade agreements and cancel those already signed resonate here. Trump's problem, however, is that most of the blue-collar workers that support him also supported Mitt Romney and John McCain and that wasn't enough. He is going to have to win new blue-collar workers who didn't vote for the Republicans in the past. Exit polls from the primaries show that Trump has brought in very few new Republicans although he has gotten Republicans who always vote in the general election to vote in the primaries for the first time this year.

Finally, the fourth region is the Interior West. Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico are always battleground states, but this year Arizona could also be in play, in large part because a third of the population is Latino. To make it even more exciting, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is also running for reelection this year, despite his being found in contempt of court this month for defying a federal judge's orders to stop targeting Latinos. Arpaio is immensely controversial and will bring out both supporters and opponents in large numbers.

So there you have the election in a nutshell. And the answer to the question asked in the headline: Yes, Trump can win, but it's going to require a lot of things to break his way.

The Amish are descendants of German and Swiss Anabaptists who opposed on theological grounds any active cooperation with a civil society regarded as inherently wicked (they were savagely persecuted by Protestant and Catholic governments alike). Traditionally, most Anabaptists have opposed serving in public office or in the military and the taking of oaths on religious grounds. Voting (not really an option when Anabaptist beliefs were being formed) is most definitely frowned upon as a sort of collaboration with the enemy. And so voting rates among the Amish (and their cousins, the less culturally primitive Mennonites) are very low.

Thor’s intensity surprised Glenn. “I’ve never heard you like this, Brad,” Glenn said. “I’m terrified,” Thor answered. Glenn reminded Thor of when he rang the bell about Barack Obama, but never said anything like an “extinction-level event.” “Listen, I believe it was somebody at National Review that used that exact term, and it resonated with me. …Trump is a boorish orange raccoon. He is an absolute jackass. He is. I’ve said that on your show before. I despise Trump just because he’s such a boorish jackass. But the problem is, is that — damn it, damn it fellow Republicans — damn you, fellow conservatives, who cannot see the potential for tyranny in this man. Shame on you, shame on you all. And damn you all to hell who refuse to acknowledge the potential for tyranny. “I don’t care that things might be good under Trump. That’s not good enough to gamble America’s freedom away on. It is there for everyone with eyes to see, that this man is a potential tyrant. He is a caudillo; he is a South American strongman waiting to come into power here in the United States. He will demonize anybody that stands in his way. Congress will not stop this man. We had some of our best and brightest in my lifetime on the GOP side, lined up in this primary, and he steamrolled all of them. And he didn’t do it with great ideas. He did it by being an ass, by insulting them, by making things up. “How the hell do you debate with somebody who pulls facts out of his butt? This guy talked about stuff that wasn’t even true. These poor Republicans brought knives to a tactical nuke fight. They couldn’t win against him. And you’re telling me Congress will stand up to tyranny from Donald Trump? It will never happen. He will demagogue members of the press, members of Congress, judges. He will steamroll them, the same way dictators in South America do. It’s going to happen here. We cannot cede the battlefield to this man. There is still a fight to be had and still a fight to be won. Let’s get back in this fight.”

    Wohl eher Californien.
